European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
